I can probably answer this question after some research, but my bios puts my cd-rw (lite-on 1025s) into PIO mode 4. The question is should I go into bios and change from auto settings to manual and change that setting to UDMA? I really have no cmplaint about the cd-rw's speed but I was wondering if it was worth it, to mess with the settings. I can usaully burn about 700mb to a dsik in 2 min and 50 sec and a 70 min cd in 2 min even. thanx for any thoughts or info in advance :-)

if your cd-rw drive is sharing same ide cable with ur hard drive or other devices. the only choice you have is PIO mode.

if you really want ur cd-rw drive to gain maxium performance, let ur cd-rw standalone.

My Plextor burner runs in PIO according to my BIOS(Windows says Multi-word DMA...?) and it outperforms my Lite-on DVD drive for data transfers and everything, and the burning is just as fast as it's supposed to be. So you shouldn't concern yourself if the drive is acting normal.

Most CD-RWs run in PIO mode 4 because they are not UDMA drives. Simple as that. They still run at full speed, however, but use up a few more resources. I have my HDD as primary master and the CD-RW as secondary slave to the DVD drive. Works just fine.

The recomended setup for most CD-RW's is to be the secondary master and your other drive CD-ROM or DVD-ROM as the secondary slave. That does'nt mean it wont work with differant setup's ! NicRic

Not with my CD-RW. Says right in the instructions to install it as per my previous post. I have tried other permutations though and didn't notice any difference.

Can you burn from a HD that is setup as UltraDMA Master on IDE Primary, and a CDRW setup as PIO Slave on IDE Secondary? The reason I ask is because I set my CD's (CDROM and CDRW) to UltraDMA detect. When I tried to burn a CD to CDRW it would just hang. I tried the HD, and same thing. When I formated a CDR as a DirectCD and dragged files from the HD it worked. I went ahead and reset the cd's to PIO mode. I succesfully burned a CD to CDR. Problem is the write speed was at 8X. I have a 40X12X40. Is this the kind of speed I can expect from my CDRW? It's a wonder anyone buys anything more than 8X? I haven't tried burning files off the HD yet to the CDRW using PIO for the CDRW.
