Hi

I've got a picture problem. The problem occurs before Windows has booted, so I don't think it's related to device drivers, but maybe you can prove me wrong.

My graphics card is an XFX GeForce 8600 GTS, and my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4.

A while ago I uninstalled my graphics drivers from Windows and installed an old version of the drivers in an attempt to fix flickering in one of my older games. It didn't work, so I put the newer drivers back on.

Since then, it's been working fine, which is another reason why I don't suspect the drivers, but as I said, you might be able to prove me wrong.

Then a few days ago, the picture went strange, as you can see in this video:
http://media.putfile.com/-is-wro...

The monitor does not appear to have a problem, as its OSDs display perfectly fine, even the fullscreen logo which displays for about 1 second when the monitor is first turned on.

I guess cables could be a problem, but I doubt it. From looking at them, pins don't appear to be bent, and the cables fit really securely into the ports on the graphics card. On my old monitor, the cables were really loose and wobbled a lot, but these new ones are really sturdy and snug.

I have tried using the graphics card on both PCI-E slots to make sure there wasn't a problem with them, but the same problem occurs.

I am still waiting for my brother to let me test the card in his computer to see if I get the same problem.

Any hhelp on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, and on a side note: Yes, I know my fans are loud in that video. I'll get new ones once this problem is sorted. Been thinking about it for ages.

Also, if it's any help, my CPU appears to be running at a fairly constant 28°C (~82°F), and system temp appears to be a fairly constant 31°C (~88°F), so I don't suspect overheating. My system is not water cooled.

Video doesn't work....

If you're only having flickering problems in one specific game but other than that, the graphics work fine, why would you suspect a hardware problem?

Is there some sort of filter on computing.net which stops people from using the letters w, t and f next to each other? The link doesn't work because that part of the link is missing.

Try it this way instead:

@ jam: I suspect a hardware problem because there are display problems elsewhere, even before Windows has loaded. See the video to see what I mean. I've posted a new link here:

OK, looks like the video card is bad. Possibly overheated or over-overclocked? Is the 6pin PCIe plug connected? Is your PSU adequate?

The graphics card requires 350W, I have a 600W. The 6-pin PCI-E power cable is connected correctly and firmly, and the card is not overclocked, nor is any other hardware in the system.

I don't think it's overheated though, based on those temperatures. Also, I haven't used it for anything very demanding recently. Haven't played a game in a while. The last one I tried was Red Faction, which is the one which had the flickering problem.

Any advice?

"The graphics card requires 350W"

The card doesn't require 350W...that is the minimum recommendation for an entire system when an 8600GTS is installed. The power consumption for the 8600GTS is about 70W.

That being said, there are good PSUs & bad ones. Just saying that you have a 600W means nothing. What make/model & what are the amperage ratings?

"I don't think it's overheated though, based on those temperatures"

The temps you posted are for the CPU & system, not the video card. What you need to know is the GPU temp.

The PSU is a Trendsonic 600W modular PSU, purchased from Ebuyer.com. I don't think it's on their site anymore though.

Ampages are:
+3.3v: 32A
+5v: 36A
+12v: 23A
+12v2: 20A
-12v: 0.5A
+5VSB: 2A

I think the reason why W T & F are rejected when together in that order is that they are often an abbreviation for "What The Fu.." - all too often used on forums.

some other bloke...
