Subject: physical memory dump error. MOBO?OS: Win Xp proCPU/Ram: amd 3200+ |
Comment: Hi, All of a sudden when I was working I got a blue screen error and it started to dump the physical memory. I have two sticks, (have had them for a long time) I tested out each one, one of them caused some problems when it was by itself so I memtested the other one and nothing came up, so im guessing this is the good ram... My system is running on this one now, mem test came up showing no errors after almost 2 passes.
So my question is, is the ram good for now? or could my mobo also be causing a problem?

Reply: (edit)The one faulty stick of ram may or may not have been the sole cause of your problem but there is no way we can tell for certain. Since you have removed the known faulty ram you will simply have to use the system and see if the problem recurrs. You did not mention what size ram sticks you have. You may suffer a performance hit if the remaining stick is less than 256mb depending on what kind of apps you run. I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Reply: (edit)Two passes is not a good test. Two hours is a little better. I run it overnight.

Reply: (edit)A blue screen of death is usually caused by software. The message 'beginning physical memory dump' means that windows has instructed the computer to clear the ram. Not your memory is faulty.

Reply: (edit)Actually a memory dump means it is dumping the memory to a file on the hard drive. Then that dump can be sent to Microsoft for analysis.

Reply: (edit)'Probably' in c:\windows. You could do a search for 'dump'. I suspect that it 'might' be in the filename. You could also do a search for files created that day. I assume that you want to delete it, because it's not going to help you fix your problem.
