Subject: physical mem dump killed my cpu
|
Comment: My win2k adv server amd k6-2 450 computer dumped physical memory. I turned off my computer and when I restarted my computer made the infinite beep of death. I think my memory went bad and killed my processor. I have a friend who had something similar problem but his was under warranty. My memory stick is a little old. I hope I’m wrong. Or maybe I had 2 unrelated problems at the same time. Any thoughts?

Reply: (edit)Clear your CMOS/BIOS settings. Start back up, see what happens . . . Your mobo manual shows how to do that. Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Reply: (edit)If you can't even get a bios to post on the screen anymore, then your mobo has probably had it. However, since you said that you had a bios problem awhile back, perhaps it's just the bios itself that's bad? In that case, go to: www.badflash.com/ and they should be able to help you out. I just used their service myself recently, and it worked like a charm. Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Reply: (edit)Actually, it could be the memory too - although if memory goes bad, you should at least get some error beeps every time that you try to power up . . . I always use memory in identical pairs for that reason. It may cost a few dollars more, but that way if a mamory module goes bad, you still have another one to rely on, until you can get a replacement. ESPECIALLY on any server machine . . . Reply: (edit)I killed a Pentium 1 board once self learning the debug command in dos. I don't know what I was doing let alone what i did but I just pressed enter and it was lights out. Turned out my BIOS was dead and yours too by the sounds of things. I managed to recover the board however after downloading a file from the manufacturers site. The file created a bootable floppy with a bios image which automatically flashes - simple as that.
