i have a question. i was wondering what a thing that hooks into your phone line would be called. heres what it does, you plug it into your phoneline, and when someone calls the number, they have to enter a number signalling the phone switcher to route the call to something. almost like a phoneline router. and if the person does not enter a number, it hangs up after so long. what is this peice of hard ware called? thanks so much.

Your request is somewhat outside the scope of this computing forum, but do you mean something like this?

im sorry for posting this here then, i didnt know where else too. but that isnt what i was looking for. my dad and i are trying to find the thing so we can block the annoying telemarketer calls. and we dont want to spend any more money on the phone bill because well, it just doesnt make any sense. we pay for it , and those people are using it to annoy us. thanks anyway.

If you're located in the US sign up for the Federal "no call" list. It does help, but you need to follow up---after you sign up, if you still get calls, follow up on them.

The US do-not-call list name mentions works very well, supposedly with 80% efficiency. But my personal experience has been much better.

Some time back I saw this gadget advertised. It appears to be what you want, but I've no idea how effective it is. Good luck!

i live in canada, so that option is no go for me. but the device we want will work. i just dont know what the name of it is. you give the number to people that you want to call you, say "685" and when they call me, they have a preset time like maybe 10 seconds or so to enter that number or else they get cut off. therefore the telemarketer computers will not be able to annoy us. :) i hope i can figure out the name of it. thanks again.

We computer guys never give up! Try PrivateTimeā„¢ PT100. It seems exactly like what you describe, with a ring-through code.

my dad got this thing called "The Stick" and it does exactly what we want. when people call, they push a number to get through. thanks for the help. we would have gotten the private time thingy but, its discontinued.
