Comment: Whenever I plug in my Modem, if there is a phone plugged in at the same time, the phones ring non-stop I know that it is not a fault with the wiring or cable as a friends modem that I borrowed didn't do this, it has happened with both internal and external modems. I have a 'DIAMOND Supra Express 56e' PLEASE help me it's getting annoying having to switch the cable's and the modem has an anser machine facility that I would like to use. TA

Reply: (edit)Are you saying this is happening with more than one modem? (You said:)""it has happened with both internal and external"" I cannot quite conceive of this---ringer voltage is somewhere around 100v AC, yes, I said ONE HUNDRED VOLTS AC!! It almost sounds to me like you have some sort of line fault somewhere. If it IS IN FACT present with more than one modem, I'd check or have someone check--the wall outlets and computer power cables including all surge suppressors/extension cords/ UPS, whatever is hooked to the computer to BE SURE that the ground is actually hooked up and working. DO NOT assume anything--I've certainly seen wall outlets with broken grounds. IF this produces nothing, and IF what you said about more than one modem is true, I'd suspect a fault in the phone line wireing--and the only way your'e gonna check that is a call to the phone company.

Reply: (edit)Yeah, I'm a little confused about what you said also. Are you saying your friend’s modem was an internal and yours is external? Or do you have both? I don't know. I'm thinking it's your modem 'cause you said your friends modem worked fine. Did you try your modem at your friend’s house? Oh yeah, and Name is right, don’t EVER work on a phone line without unplugging it first! I’ve heard of some phone company’s that send out 150 Volts for the ringer! Symbios

Reply: (edit)Well, the shock hazard is a good point, but what I was trying to say, is, I can't conceive exactly of a scenario where this would happen, without some sort of fault/short. The modem should not EVER actually send ringer voltage down a line or to another phone, and unless something is really screwed up, I can't figure how this is happening.

Reply: (edit)If I understand correctly, your friends modem worked, but yours ( both internal and external) did not. If this is true, I would suspect the fault is on your equipment. The first item I would check is the cable used to connect the modem to the phone wall socket. Was your friends used when testing his modem? These cables are not one to one connections, and can differ at the modem end. Thus it is best to use the one supplied with the modem. Good luck - Keep us posted.
