Hi, I just bought a remanufactured CDRW and need some things.

I opened the box and because it is remanufactured all that came in it was the drive itself.

What do I need to install this? Just download the driver for the CDRW from the web, or is there additional software needed?

Also where can I buy the cable to install it in my machine? I was told I need a 40pin IDE cable.

It is a Philips CDD4401/71 and I am installing it in my compaq presario 5000 US which has windows ME OS.

Thanks so much for your help.

the best cdr software is nero seach google for the demo

this is all you should need i think as this is all i use basicly you dont need a driver as this program supports most types of cdr
and most cdrs have there driver inside (firmware)

try philips website anyway to check as mine is a hp cdr and may be different

as for the cable any computer shop should sell you one of those

Your drive installs just like an ordinary CD-ROM drive.Normally it is set to slave SL if installed with some other drive like hard disk or master MS if all alone on one of the EIDE ports(modern PC's have two ports).Look at the back of the unit and set the small jumper to the position you want. You may alredy have the cable inside your PC. If you have a EIDE cable with two connectors, use the free one. If not buy one long cable with two connectors to install your drive. There is no priority on the cable.Align the dotted side of the cable with the pin one as indicated on the motherboard and on the drive.Keep your hard drive master in all cases.Try to keep the colour of the cable to hard disk to the same colour. If grey, buy grey. The connectors may be black.Notice the colour if different to keep the speed of your hard disk.If you don't have many drives, install the CD-RW on the second port. You can buy those EIDE cables in any computer shop around your town.
If you need some software try CD Mate Deluxe trial edition.

Good luck.

you could attach it to your hd cable but this will slow down your hard drive

but it will do till you get another cable

just set the jumper on the back of the cd to slave and attach it to the spare port on your hd lead and plug in a power lead
