I have a Dell Dimension 8200 in which i would like to upgrade the cpu. I am currently running a P-4 1.7 478 pin cpu on a 400mhz front side bus. The prices for the P4 2.6 or 2.8 478 pin 400fsb have come down considerably and I was wondering if I could just drop one in or are there other things I have to take into consideration. My motherboard is manufactured by Dell. thanks in advance Dave

It should drop right in with no problems.

I would FIRST make sure you have the latest BIOS version from Dell. Older versions were not written with support for faster CPUs and hence require an update.

The REAL maker of that mother board is who you need to check with. They would know best what cpu's will work in that system. Look on the motherboard somewhere around the pci slots for the name and model of the board.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

I found this site http://www.spongebobsupgradesite.com/index.html which is a great site dedicated to the upgrade of my model computer, for anyone trying to upgrade a dell 8200 it is a godsend. Dell would not help as they don't recommend upgrading cpus, Anyone know how to get the z shaped wire off of a chiset heatsink?
