Subject: Pentium 4 chip on older motherboard
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4
Comment:

I had a Dell Dimension 8100 series. 1500 MHz. 1.5 GHz. 128 MB RAM.
I built a new computer and the motherboard just died. Can I use the chip from the new motherboard on my old motherboard? How do I know if it will work? My new chip is a Pentium 4, 3 GHz. I also would probably use the extra RAM from the new computer which would bring it up to 512mb.

It all depends if your motherboard will support it. I doubt it if it has a 1.5 Ghz in it so far. I suggest just getting a newboard for the stuff you have all ready if you wish to put it to use.

Processor P4@ 2.6 Ghz, FSB@535Mhz
RAM 512MB's PC2700/32001 256 stick of each. Hard Disk Drives 1 40 GB HD 1 10 GB HD CD/DVD Drives CDRW52X

I assumed as much, but I want to know how can I tell for sure? How do you know what chip your motherboard can handle?
