Hi all,
Just a quick one. My mobo will support up to a P4 3.04mhz CPU. At the moment I have a 2.8 with 512 cache. I would like to take advantage of the the 1meg cache that a 3.0 offeres but thinking to the future, sometime in the next year I will be upgrading my mobo so I was thinking of going for at least a P4 3.4. My question is would my mobo handle it and mayby clock it down to it's 3.04 capability or would it just not like it.Also, would I see any improvment in speed and quallity. I play games like HL2, Farcry and FS2004.
Cheers guys

I emphasize your wanting to upgrade by spending only a little at a time. But my honest opinion would be to wait until you have the money for both and then get both together. I don't know the answer about being able to slow it down. When you're jumping from 512 to 1G cache, you would notice a difference only if your computer is slowing down while playing those games. We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

I agree with angrymen2001. It's not like your current system is a "dog". You'd be making quite an investment for very little return

If you buy a 3.0GHz Intel, then you better go with Northwood giving your 512 cache only. Prescotte technology gives you 1G cache but the downside is that it overheats a lot and the fact is: going over 512 cache does not improve your speed at all with the exception of some (very fiew) applications that acually utilize the extra cache. Not sure about 3.4Ghz chips.. Prescott might have improved the temperature issue, but also carefully investigate some "freezing" problems with prescott known in Summer 2004. As for the mobo.. The above suggestions made sense. Just save a bit more and go with the new mobo too.
Good luck!

Thanks guy's. I think I need to think about this a bit more.
I have always gone with Pentiums for reasons I don't really know so I would be open to the AMD option. Could anyone recomend good MB and CPU combinations both Pentium and AMD and of course some prices might help too.
Thanks again

I built my first AMD mobo with an Asus motherboard 3 years ago and have built a few more with asus and have yet to have any comeback for a repair. I know this because it's all family that I built these systems for. Depending on your needs, any of the mobos with nforce would be good. As for the processor, I wouldn't settle for anything less than XP2500+. For an asus mobo and an xp2500+ You're looking at probably around $150 minimum. Not positive of that cost as it's been a while since I looked up prices.
