I have an old Compaq laptop and want to use my USB broadband modem connection. However I don't have any USB ports. I have seen PCMCIA USB cards for sale from about £20. Is it just a case of taking the current PCMCIA card out (56K modem) and put the new one in? Or are there some internal connections I need to do?

Thats basically it. You will need to install drivers for it which should come with the card. No internal connections required.
If you ever need to go back to the modem, just remove the USB card and plug in the modem card and you will be up and running again.

There is one thing to check. That you have a 32-bit CardBus PCMCIA slot. Apparently there are only 32-bit USB2 PCMCIA adapters. It depends upon how old is your laptop.

I've never found a 16bit pcmcia usb card; anywhere, for any price, from any manufacturer, nor any reference to one.
"older laptop" is the key here...if your machine doesn't support 32bit (cardbus) it's likely you're out of luck.

However if you can get an ethernet connected broadband modem, there are 16 bit ethernet PCMCIA cards.
Summary: I'm not entirely sure if this will work or not, but what about a 16 bit PCMCIA ethernet card with a RJ-45 to USB adapter cable? I know it's meant to add ethernet to a USB port, but since the data flow...
