PCMCIA socket problems

Following a fresh install of Win2000 on my Toshiba Portege 3110CT, the PCMCIA socket appears to be inoperable.

The socket was working perfectly under Windows 98SE.

No cards are recognised when inserted in the machine.

Please can someone advise me on what I should check to see if this is a hardware or software problem.
