Hi, I am also having a problem on the same scale at the moment.

I recently got my friends old motherboard,
(AM2NF6G-VSTA Bios P2.10) on the start up it says, running dual core AMD Athlon 64 x 2 4200+ 2.2Ghz.

The motherboard states on websites it is capable of running PCI-E at 16, which my graphics card is deffinately capable of (ATI Radeon HD 3450 DDR2).

However, in my settings in the ATI CCC software, it says it is only set at PCI-E @ 8.

I have looked everywhere for updates but have had no look. Anyone able to help me?

In the BIOS can you set PCI-E speed as 8 or 16 ?

If there is no such setting in the BIOS, what I suggest is, uninstall graphic card drivers and then uninstall the graphic card from Device Manager ( not physically removing the card ) and reboot. Upon Windows starting, it will tell you it has found new hardware. Just cancel all windows that open and install the drivers from the CD that came with the card or downloaded from the card maker's web site.

Below is a link to the manual for your board. I didn't read the entire manual but did find references to the PCIe Graphics slot. The speed of the slot is not mentioned. Normally if a graphics slot will function at 16x then it is stated. You can read more to determine the speed.

I did see a reference to which AMD cards are not supported. That is Reference #8.

I suggest you review the entire manual. It should clear up any questions you have.

Just checked the M/B manual whose link OtheHill supplied, look at page 33. There, Primary Graphics Adapter should be set to PCI Express, not PCI nor onboard. What is yours set at ? By the way, ATI chips also supported except those mentioned.

The GeForce 6100/nForce 405 chipset combo used on your board supports x8 mode only.

Page 16 of the manual states that PCIE1 slot is used for PCI Express cards with x16 lane graphics cards. Whatever that means ?

OK, let me try again...this time, directly from nVidia's write up about the 6100/n405:

"Designed to run with the next-generation PCI Express bus architecture; includes 1 x8 and 2 x1 PCI Express lanes to support PCI-Express add-in cards."

I suspected as much as jam read. If the slot was 16x they would say so.

josh, you wouldn't notice an appreciable difference anyway unless you have a fast graphics card. That is an economy board so don't expect too much.

suatini, The line you are reading simply means you can install PCIe x16 cards in the slot. Doesn't mean they will run at 16x.

Thanks for the clarification, OtheHill. I suspected that as well. Misleading specifications.

That appears to be an entry level card. I doubt installing it in a different motherboard would make much difference.

When I made comments about your current motherboard I didn't mean to imply it was no good. Just an entry level board that most users are satisfied with the integrated graphics.

What is it your present setup can't do that prompts you want to upgrade?

How much RAM are you running?

I'm using 2Gb of RAM at the moment, and id just like to see graphical improvements in the games I am running as some can't be maxed, and if their okay when running at 8 speed I'm sure i would be a lot happier and see a differnce running at 16 speed.

You are making false assumptions. The difference may not even be noticable.

When AGP was ramping up it went from 1x to 2x to 4x to 8x. May users reported little difference when setting to 8x with an 8x card that had been running in 4x.

It is your money but I would suggest you wait until you need to upgrade everything.

Newer, faster boards will use different RAM, for one thing.
