PCI-e x4 card in a PCI-e x16 slot

Evening all,
I just recently purchased an Intel PRO-1000 Dual gigabit card (FW82546GB) on ebay. I thought it was PCI-e x1, but it turned out to be PCI-e x4. My mobo, an AsRock 939Dual-SATAII does not have a pci-e x4 slot. I tried using the PCI-e x16 slot; I clear POST but XP Pro crashes on boot, and does so in safe mode as well. I haven't been able to find a clear cut reason why this is happening, so I'm turning to you guys.
Is this card DOA, or can I not put a pci-e x4 (or anything lower than x16) in an x16 slot?

Would think it would be backward compatible and just run at the slower speed. Check your mobo website for a bios flash or a setting that needs to be changed

I've got the latest bios version and checked the website...I've sent them an email earlier today, but I wanted to know if anyone had first-hand experience with something similar (pci-e x1 in x16 slot, etc).
