I was browsing thru Windows Explorer and came accross a .TXT file called hardware and found one of the topic's interesting since I installed a PCI Video card in my PC (no AGP slot:-( ) My PC came with i810 intergrated graphic's with only 4M.B.'s on Mem. I installed,a couple of years ago an ATI RADEON PCI and the improvement was ten fold .However some games still detect my primary video as VGA only ? Here is the paragraph from the Hardware.TXT, and could someone explain it to me ?
>PCI Systems
-----------
If the video device is configured by the BIOS to use an IRQ
and you use the secondary PCI IDE controller in your computer,
your video will work only in VGA mode. To load the accelerated
Windows Me driver for your video, disable the secondary PCI IDE
controller in the BIOS if it is not controlling an IDE device.
Additionally, you may have to disable it in Device Manager.

(To open Device Manager, open System properties in Control
Panel, and then click the Device Manager tab.)

An alternative (if supported by the BIOS) is to disable the IRQ
of the video device.<

I did disable the i810 intergrated graphics in device manager ,in my BIOS there was no option to disable onboard graphics ,however I do have it set to PCI Frist !
Thanks to All ,Nick

The i810 automatically disables the onboard graphics when a PCI graphics card is detected.

Try looking for a setting in the BIOS...something like, "Assign IRQ for VGA"...if it's set to ENABLED (default), try setting to DISABLED

How many total drives do you have in this system?

Hi OtheHILL,
I have my H.D. as the Master on the Primary IDE channel ,and the CD-RW as Master and DVD-ROM as slave on the Secondary IDE ? Why do you ask ?
Thsnks Nick

The instructions you were given mention the following:
"Windows Me driver for your video, disable the secondary PCI IDE
controller in the BIOS if it is not controlling an IDE device.
Additionally, you may have to disable it in Device Manager". You can't do that because you are using both IDE channels. I'm not sure why the instructions told you to do that anyway. If you can set your resolution hagher than 640x480 16color then you are not running at VGA. Therefore that remark must refer to the onboard video. I wouldn't be concerned about it if your system seem to be working OK. The only thing I would recommend is that you look for an option in the BIOS for memory assigned to onboard video. If it isn't greyed out, set the value to 0.

Thanks again OtheHill,
In my BIOS the video Mem is assigned 64M.B.'s ,even though the i810 graphics has only 4 M.B. However I have been told B/4 about this setting , and Iam going to see what happens when I change it to zero !
Take Care NicRic

The onboard video chip as 4MB built into the chip but can access system memory. That is why you want to set to 0.
