I'm using Windows 98 SE, my modem is a Conexant SoftK56 Data/Fax PCI modem... and I'm screwed!
I had to format my hard drive and re-install Windows due to a boot sector virus. Mostly, things are fine, but my modem wont re-install. Apparently, two of the COM Ports I used to have have disappeared into thin air - and not just in Windows, but in DOS debug mode, they don't show up. Simple things like adding new hardware just don't do it.
But without the port, how do I install my modem? I've tried moving it around the available card slots inside my computer, looking for ways to change the COM port the board uses (it used to be COM 3 - which of course is gone) and even bluffing and just installing the drivers anyway. All to no avail.
One thing that might be interest, but I can't figure out, is that under the list of devices installed on my computer there is a 'PCI Communication Device' that is missing its drivers. It makes sense (to me anyway) for this to be my modem, but trying to get it to take the correct drivers that I've found is no good. It just wont. And I know these are the corrent drivers - when I go to add a modem manually, mine is there as an option when it previously wasn't. But it's a PCI modem - so installing it on COM 1 or COM 2 is no good. But I have to install it somewhere!
Very frustrating...
Thanks,
Joe

Are you ablsolutely certain you have the correct drivers? This sounds exactly like a drivers problem. Did you obtain your drivers based on the chipset number on the modem? If you can get the number from the chipset, someone here can find the correct drivers for your modem.

You might find out more if you post this in 9x forum also. Is there something you can remove on com port 1 or 2 and try Or try finding drivers on conexant site
Good Luck

It sounds like its missing the drivers. When you install the correct drivers, windows should assign a COM port to it. Good Luck
