Comment:

I run a computer with a Duron 800 and GeForce2 MX400 based on a PCChips M810LMR v1.6 motherboard. When i turned the machine on the other day, the power light, the hard disk, fans, etc all operate, but nothing appeared on the screen. I removed the geforce2 and used the onboard graphics but still nothing appeared on the screen. The screen definately works.

i think it may be the processor which is fried, but can someone help.

Here are the exact specs of the computer.

AMD Duron 800MHz
PCChips M810LMR v1.6 mobo
256MB SDRAM (133MHz)
Maxtor 4.3GB Hard Drive
MSI GeForce2 MX400
Onboard AC97 sound

Thanks in advance

Toss out the 12 dollar motherboard and buy somthing better.
Even if it does not fix the problem you will be far ahead of where you are now.

the mobo is a must, but first try ur CPU on someone elses PC and also test ur ram in that way too.

Firstly, i'm a student in England, therefore i haven't got a lot of money to throw around on new computer parts.

Secondly, i've grown quite attatched to my computer and those bits have served me for many years. (I'm beginning to sound a little cheesy now, but you get the idea!)

A friend of mine has kindly offered to lend me his old Athlon 850 which has lay dormant in his cupboard for a while. i will use it to determine whether it's the motherboard of the processor which is faulty. This may take a while, but i will reply in the near future to comment on any new developments. I would alo appreciate more suggestions from you all.

Also, could somebody tell me how much a replacement duron 800 would cost? (Obviously second hand because they're now obsolete.)

Thanks for the help

...Forgot to say something else. The processor does actually heat up even though the bios does'nt kick in. Does this mean the processor still works or not?

Thanks

Heat doesn't mean anything.

Success!!! I persuaded my dad to take the processor into work today so he could check it on one of the machines where he works (They have Athlon XP3000+. Lucky sods!) He found out the processor actually works, so it must be the motherboard. I'm still waiting for my friend to lend me his Athlon 850 just so i can verify this. But this has narrowed down the problem quite a bit.

I'll reply with further developments.

Pc chips are ok when they work that is. Probably best to bin it and get an Ecs or Gigabyte board there cool and run realy well. But if you want a cheaper board go for an Asrock K7S8X they have 4 built in usb 2 ports and agp 8x as standard and are very good for a cheap board. But stay away from Abit and Soltek as I've had nothing but problems with these boards and don't reccomend them.
