Hi..

I am having a very starange problem.
I just bought a 256 MB PC100Hz SDRAM. I earlier had 256 MB PC 133Hz SDRAM. When i insert the RAMs one at a time. Both shows correctly 256MB ram is available in windows. My Problem is that when i inserted both 256MB RAMS and started the PC. The RAM shown is (384MB instead of 512MB(256+256) ).

I wonder if its due to the Clock Speed difference???

Any help appriciated.

Clock speed should not be a problem. It is probably a compatibility issue. Some memory sticks from different brands are more compatible than others when mixed together. On this matter Kingston is generally the most compatible you can find in situations like the one you experience.

It is most likely a density issue.

does one have more chips than the other? eg. is one double sided with 8 on each side (16 total) and the other single sided with 8 on one side and none on the other? (the one with only 8 being denser)

All the ram will run at the speed of the slowest module, but that has nothing to do with your improper total memory amount.

You have a ram compatibilty problem.

See response 5 in this for more info about compatibilty, and places where you can find out what will work in your mboard for sure:

Well thanks for all the comments.

I solved the problem by trying different combination of RAM SLOTS, and one combination worked for me :).

Now it shows 512 MB..

Thanks all

Reading the manual would have told you that too.
