Subject: PC won't boot - againOS: Windows 98SECPU/Ram: PIII - 500 Mhz - 384MB |
Comment: This is a follow-on to my problem yesterday. I installed a second hard drive and now the PC won't boot. Immediately after power is applied the PC gives a 2-3 second beep, waits 5 or so seconds then beeps again (over and over...). I disconnected the new drive with no change. Yesterday I jiggled the video card and it started booting OK (but giving a different problem.) Today it failed again. I removed and reseated the video card and memory. Any other ideas?

Reply: (edit)Is it giving a beep code? Listen for a consistant code, and you might be able to determine problem. When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

Reply: (edit)I don't have an extra video card. The bioscentral site tells me the beep code means memory is bad. I have an extra memory module that I have swapped in and out in every combination I can think of - same result. Are there other ways of testing things without having a spare PC or extra parts? (It would seem pretty much like a miracle if there are)

Reply: (edit)I verified that my memory stick was good by putting it in another machine. I installed another video card in case that was the problem. I still get the same beep code. 4 seconds on, 4 seconds off, repeating. What do I check next?

Reply: (edit)With only RAM and Video it powers up for a few seconds then shuts down (power supply goes off.) Plugged in the hard drive. Sometimes it runs a few seconds longer then shuts down, other times (ususally) it gives a long beep and then shuts down.
