I am betting the power supply has failed. I would try reseating all power connections just to rule that out.

Likely

I want to go like my grandfather did. Peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming at the top of my lungs like the passengers in his car.

I would really suspect the power supply. However it could be motherboard. If reseating all power connections made no difference I would try changing the psu. See if you can borrow one first. I have seen 4 myself now that still supplied power to various items but not the motherboard or cpu. One of my own even I still got the hard drive light flash several times as well as fans spinning and other lights on and it was the psu.
