Hi guys,
I have a ASUS P7131 TV tuner installed on my PC.
I spend ages to make the s--- work and now everything seems to be fine - he picture is relatively clear and there is not much noise.

BUT!!!

I noticed the following: every time I plug my cable TV cable in the tuner's input jack, my monitor starts to flicker.

The monitor is a Philips 190s.
My video card is NVidia, can't remember the model.

Why is my cable TV cable making my monitor flicker?????

Anyone had the same problem?

Any solutiuons?

Thanks!

You are probably physically moving the card and disrupting the contacts in the slot. I wouldn't recommend connecting anything except USB while under power. Whay are you removing the coaxial cable each time?

I am not moving any cards - it is well attached with screws and all. It is pretty damn rock solid.
The flicker appears even if I barly touch the tuner's input jack with the coaxial cable's jack.
I guess there's some kind of interferance that f*cks up the whole machine and messes up my video card which in turn makes my monitor flicker.

Maybe it has something to do with grounding...

Hmmm, it's f*cking strange. This makes my TV tuner useless - I can't watch TV on my PC while my TFT monitor flickers like an old CRT from 1950.

If it is "something to do with grounding", why don't you try an inline isolator. They screw in line, and solve problems of floating grounds. You may have to buy one on-line, because BestBuy and similar stores probably won't have one. Here's what I'm talking about : http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...

I wonder what'll happen if I do this ?

Do you get the same results if you connect the cable while you are shutdown?

I will try to plug the cable while the PC is shut down. I think it's same thing but I will try it anyway.

I will try to turn the PC's electricity contact plug too - sometimes this halps get the phase off of the PC's casing.

I just tried to plug the cable in while the PC was shut down - no effect.
The monitor flickers.

Is your computer connected to a properly grounded 3 prong recepticle?

I know that there is grounding but I don't know if the recepticles are grounded properly.
I live in a rathe rold house - it was built in 1962.
But I thinkt here is grounding. Don't know if it is working OK, though.
How could I check that?

There are testers available. Check a the hardware or building supply. I'm not sure if that would make a difference but it might. I have used two different AIW cards and 2 TV tuner cards in three different computers and have never run into your problem. Is the coaxial cable of good quality and not running parallel to and AC wiring? The shielding on the coaxial cable should also be grounded. This is normally done at the cable entry point.

The cable is split by several splitters. they may be causing the problem.

Signal loss occurs with each split. If there are any uncapped ports or loose unterminated cables, additional signal loss can occur. If your cable provider is willing to make a service call, they can test the signal strength at each termination. The coaxial wiring in your home is only as good as the weakest link. Good quality quad shielded cable, correct fittings with good installation techniques and number of appliances all have an impact on final quality.

I am not concerned about the quality of the picture or about signal loss - I have two TVs and the neighbours (who live in the sma ehouse) have 2 as well.
We are sharing the signal among these 4 TVs and there is no problem whatsoever with picture quality.

I just need to prevent my monitor from flickering every time I try to plug the cable into my PC.
Gotta find what exactly is causing this phenomenon.

Here is a link to the Asus forum. Post your problem there and maybe one of the moderators can help. Being as that is a Hybrib card you may have the cabling or settings wrong. Your first post indicated you had problems configuring this card. Read all the system requirements and verify you have the inputs and outputs connected right. Are you in the USA?

The refresh rate on the monitor could be the cause, what is it set at? If it is low, you could try to raise it while staying within the monitor's acceptable limit.

OtheHill, can't see the link to the Asus forum.
No, I am in Europe.

Sabertooth, it flickers at all refresh rates. Of course, it flickers more on the low refresh rates.
Without the TV cable plugged in the PC, the TFT monitor does not flicker even at the lowest refresh rates.

Do you really think someone is going to respond to this thread that hasn't already done so. The OP problem wasn't solved and the responses stopped. If you wish to try for help here you need to start your own thread. If you'll notice the OP had to enter computer and OS specs. Make sure that when you do start a thread you fill in all the blanks.

Hello there.
No I haven't solved the problem.

I just removed the TV tuner card and forgot about using it anymore.
$70 wasted for nothing - should have bought a neck for my current guitar building project. But how could I know?

Actually, at present I am experiencing problems with a flickering TFT monitor (same one).
It just flickers.
No TV tuner installed this time.
