I might be wrong, but shouldn't computer engineers know enough to do basic troubleshooting steps on the system?

Anyway, some questions:

Is it just slow browsing the internet, or in opening/using programs?

How long does it take for Windows to come up, or an application to load? Give an example.

Have you defragmented?

How many applications do you have running in the background?

With 2 gigs of RAM, you should be able to have a decent amount of apps running at once without a whole lot of performance degradation (especially when using XP), but that depends on what kind of applications you're running. I don't know if maybe you're running a memory intensive application such as Photoshop, etc.
