my problem is my pc shuts down whenever a switch turns off the motor on the refrigerator in the kitchen. i can hear it every time the motor goes off the pc shuts down and a beeping alarm comes on my pc. i have to turn the power supply off to restart. the surge protector does not seem to help with this. i have never seen anything like it. its very frustrating when i am in the middle of a winning chess game and my pc shuts down. any suggestions as to what may be causing this or has anyone else ever had to deal with this issue?

The refrigerator is supposed to be on it's own circuit, but older homes may have the refrigerator outlet & several other outlets on the same ciruit. Try plugging the PC into a different outlet.

thanks for the reply. i tried that and it still shuts down. strange thing is the laptop doesn't do it. but my desk top does. so it has to be in the pc that it somehow picks up the motor going off on the refrigerator.

If you can swap out the power supply, try that.

Your house or apartment may have substandard wiring. Check the neutral and/or ground circuits. If you have a meter check the voltages with and without the refrigerator running. You apparently have a relative large voltage surge.

thanks for the reply wizard-fred. i will see if maintenance can come by the apt. with a circuit tester. i am sure they may have a tester.
