Problem:PC power on, switch off, power on

Compaq presario 6000 series
My PC was working fine just the other day...
I have recently installed a new 120gb 7200 rpm HDD
Everything was working fine after adding the HDD, an optical mouse for around one week.
Then today something happend
When I switch on the PC, it powers on, the CPU fan, fan at the back start spining, Monitor show amber led light, DVD writer start up...

Then suddenly in 2 seconds or so..power just shutdown...then it again power on...the CPU fan, fan at the back start spinning, Monitor show amber led light, there is power to the DVD writer...the keyboard num lock led keep on flashing...

At first I thought maybe the HDD...I removed it..the same thing happen...
I think it may be a pwer supply problem

Could someone please enlighten me on the issue...

Hi realdan:
If you think the problem is with the power supply try unplugging all devices from power supply to see if it turns off after running some time, you could have a bad power switch or relay. If it does then it look for the problem there, if not you need to find out if one of the devices is causing a possible overload & shutdown, this you must to with great caution or you might damage your hardware.

Good luck,
Z

My PSU is 220 watts
I have installed the ATI Radeon 9800 SE, Creative Sound Card 7.1,...worked fine for already a month...one week before I change the HDD to a new 7200rpm Seagate 120gb HDD..and connected an optical mouse that came along with the graphics card which lights up when you move the mouse...apart from those I have a Pentium 2.4ghz, a DVDR/RW
Is 220 watts sufficient to handle all those

I removed the graphics card, soundcard, mouse...but still the same...I think the damage is done....

I have decided to call HP/Compaq technical support...No more tinkering with the hardware...:-) just wanna limit the damage...

I just hope it is the PSU...that is the culprit..Hope it'snt the CPU :-/

Thanks for replying...will come back to you...if the problem got rectified

Hi

From what I've read - minimum recomended for a P4 is 300W. I thnk it is probably a bit more than 300W now, as P4's are running much faster then those made alast year.
