Check the jumper setting on the Sony drive (master, slave, or cable select) and make sure the NEC is set up the same.

You need to enter the BIOS screens and verify the drive is being identified by model. If it isn't then use the AUTO DETECT keystrokes on the same screen to have the BIOS identify the drive. To enter the BIOS watch the screens while starting the computer. There should be a message on what keystrokes are needed to enter the BIOS. Also check the drive jumpers as was mentioned above.

wot I cant understand is how I can plug my sony drive in which is basicaly the same type of hardware and my PC will detect it no problems.

and then I can attach my new drive in the exact same way, carefully making sure that all the IDE cables are pushed in, and it suddenly wont detect it.

having a nightmare !

Note that the jumpers on the rear of the drives do not necessarily belong in the same physical position. Look on the drives for a diagram showing the jumper settings and set the NEC to match whatever the Sony is set for.

Perhap I wasn't clear with a prior reply. Most BIOS screens will have a feature call AUTO DETECT. Auto detect works like this. First you set the appropriate IDE channel to AUTO but then you sometimes also need to execute a keystroke or strokes to force the BIOS to look for all drives. This may result in the DVD player being IDed by model. As was stated by others here you MUST have both the jumpers and the cable positioned correctly or the drive will not be found. Don't use cable select. Use master or slave, as the case may be. Be sure the IDE cable is connected with wire#1 (Red) corresponding to #1 on the drive.
