Hi,

Need urgent assistance. I have a v typical PC - Win XP, 40GB HDD, 256 RAM, CD-RW. I bought a new RAM chip 256MB since I had a empty slot. After I inserted the new RAM in the new slot, the machine simply beeped 3 times and did not boot. Since thin, I have remove the new RAM and put in the original configuration. But I still get the same issue. The machine just beeps 3 times and nothing happens.

To get an answer, you'll need to fill in the blanks. What make/model motherboard & CPU. Is the RAM PC100/PC133 or DDR? If it's DDR, is it PC2100, 2700, or 3200? Is the new RAM single sided or double sided? What about the old RAM?

Are you sure you didn't knock something loose when you added the RAM? Make sure everything is fully seated. If you can't get it to boot, try resetting the BIOS (ClearCMOS with the power cord unplugged) & try to bootup again. Remember to correct ALL your BIOS settings after the reset - default settings are not good performance settings.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Here are the details :
Dunno how to specify the make/model of the CPU.
The RAM is PC133 The new RAM is double sided, but the 2 original sticks are single sides. But since I have moved to the original configuration of 128 x 2 single sided. That should not make a difference ?

I am sure everything is in place since I have checked it all.

How do I reset the BIOS ? Remeber the machine does not even boot. Can I do it directly accessing the motherboard ?

Check all your cables and plugs, you must have either knooecked something loose, or not reseated the ram sticks back perfectly.
3 beeps is either the ram not correctly seated or incorrect ram, or video card blown or not correctly seated.

Tried resetting the BIOS, by removing the battery for 20mins and then restarting. No change. 3 beeps continue after powering on the computer.

Double checked all the connections / RAM. Everything seems to be rock solid and in place..

Any more advice ?

You do not have to remove the battery for 20 min...a few seconds is all that's needed, but the power cord MUST be unplugged.

Since you have PC133 RAM, you may have encountered the dreaded "density issue", but that doesn't explain why your system will no longer boot when the new 256MB stick is removed. My guess would still be that you knocked something loose.

Hi,

I tried again. Reinserted everything. Reset the BIOS. But the beeping continues.

Am completely frustrated. I must have dismantled and put together my PC 4 times by now!!

Any suggestions ?

T

You need to get to a shop at this point because this is definitely a hardware issue, and what I would do is cut back to a basic start position...if fans and lights work you know the mb is OK, could be cpu. Could be PSU...could be something fell into ram slots when you were removing them and shorted out connection...but I would take mb out and hook up cpu, psu and add hardware piece by piece until you find the culprit and I doubt you are equipped to do that.
