Well give or take a few. Working on Aunt and Uncle's PC. Said it started about 2 weekds ago. Just suddenly locking up and have to hard reboot. Don't know what's up wtih this PC. Driving me crazy, been working on it now for 14 hours straight. anyway this is what it does. I thought it was window's cause that's when the lock up would happen. Either during the Scan disk at about 34% or if you exited out Scan disk and it'll do it right before or sometimes right after Login screen. Its a PII 450 with 64mb ram. But I've just took out that 64 and put brand new stick of 128 thinking it might have been the ram. but still no go. Ok here's the Kicker. I can take this same HD, Hook up IDE adn power from my pc to it. and it works like a charm. No lock ups, no lags, no nothing. (My PC P4 1.4, 256MB ram). Now i can take this Hard drive, fdisk, reformat, reinstall 98se using my pc.. soon as i get it back in old pc.. Logon screen, boom lock up. Same with installing 98..It'll do the format, but as soon as it goes from the format to setup screen. Boom lock up. (and when i mean lock up, mouse not moving, and i let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes for i touch it). I thought it was maybe a IDE cable. So i switched the Cd drive's cable with the HD's cable. Still no go. An IDE cable from my pc won't work cause of the End that connects to MOB is diff. And Don't have any more to use at the house. Don't know what else to do. I've switched the ram from slot to slot. taken out all hardware except for video card (NIC, Sound, and modem). The only things i think it might would be is..IDE cable, MOB goin' bad, Power supply, or BIOS.

P.S. everything was running fine until the got a Worm virus a month or so ago, they remove virus and it starts locking up. but i think thats all an coquenceident (sp).

Ya'll give me some help, What ya'll think? I'm all ears....

Horsetrader:

Make sure all of the cards are seated fully. Expecially the video.
Make sure the slot-1 PII-450 is fully seated.

Make sure the cpu ands ps fan are working.

If all ok, try swapping cpu or power supply.

If it keeps locking up after usage, but it works fine in yours. It may be a bad power supply, it may not be getting enough power and shutting down. (since it works fine with your power cable)

Try another known good psu, preferably with a higher rating.

Good luck - keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply's..I'm gonna try them and see what happens.

Haven't had time to work on it lately. They need computer this past thursday to do there payroll and such. So we went out and bought a new one the other day. And I've been trying to get that one up and running smoothly. On the old other one, i've got it here at the house. I'm gonna put in another Power supply this weekend or early next week. And do the other hints mentioned. But I am having one problem, I can't find a Slot-1 processor no where around my area. Will try these and let ya'll know what's up
