PC keeps turning on and off every few seconds

Specs: Windows Vista
I've had this computer for 2 years and today when I was in the middle of writing in my excel, the computer for no apparent reason just turned itself off. But that is not the end of it. It won't turn itself on anymore, it just keeps going on and off every second. It is making weird clicking sounds and all I see is a black screen. PLEASE help me someone!!

If only 1 second at a time how do you know the computer is starting at all. Describe all you see and hear.

Have you opened the case to look? There are many reasons that could happen. You need to troubleshoot a bit to narrow down the possible causes.

With the case open first look at the fans to see if they are all gummed up with dust, dog hair, etc. If so, blow out the case using canned compressed air. Do not use a vacuum. You can damage sensitive components from ESD.

Next, while attempting to start, watch for fan movement and lights on the motherboard.

Thanks for your answer OtheHill!
I am not an expert at all, and am terrified to ruin it or something. I took it to a computer shop today and the guy there said it was a hopeless case. :( I will have to get a new one.
thank you very much again for your time in answering me!

Its just because of virus spread in your window system
Scan your pc with boot sector to remove that virus. And if it will not perform better after this, then format your c drive.

You need to find a new shop to deal with. I suppose they offered to sell you a new computer too?

You never posted the specs of your computer as you were strongly advised to do when registering here. If we knew the model we could make a better determination.

For instance emachine computer are known for substandard power supplies. If you have an emachine computer I would recommend replacing the power supply. We would need to know the specs though.

I am having the same problem where my HP Pavillion Notebook lap top starts and then the screen goes black with a short tweet. sometimes it will stay on long enough to download AVG free updates and then goes out again. I have checked all the components and the fan is not working. I cleaned it but it still doesn't run the fan. How can I check these problems out?
