PC hangs at random

Specs: Windows XP
Hi guys,

I'm a complete newbie with regards to PCs so I hope someone can understand what I am about to ask =)

Basically, my problem is that my computer hangs at random. Sometimes it happens when I am using Photoshop, a few minutes after login on Windows or when I left it on overnight.

After that, I tried restarting it and it sometimes hangs after the Windows XP loading screen (or a few minutes after login on Windows).

After a few restarts, I manage to make it work again and stop from hanging (like now).

Other info:
- Sometimes when my PC hangs, lines appear on the display.

PC Specs:
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT
320 GB Hard Disk
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.80 GHz
Motherboard: Asus P5KPL-AM/PS
Windows XP SP2

Might look at "event viewer" logs to see if caused by some process. Use help and support pages to find. Big blue question mark. This is the first place to look for what is causing it.

Might have to consider clean install back to OEM and see if stable.

It could be some software issue or driver issue but it also could be some hardware issue. Lockups were studied by (big computer company I used to work for). They spend millions on trying to find out what failed on return boards. The most likely cause was ESD damage. If that is the case you need a new system.
Other causes are common too, power supply going bad, fans stopping, connections loose. Others too.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Just an update.

I tried taking out one of the RAMs (1 GB) and so far it solves the problem. I'm not experiencing any hang now.

But my friend said the PC should be able to handle the 2 GB RAM.
