OS: WinXP Pro SP2
CPU/Ram: Sempron 2800/1GB-64 for V
Model/Manufacturer: (whitebox/DYI)
Comment:

I just bought a new KVM switch. This KVM is self-powered via PS/2 ports.

On a somewhat older computer (ECS K7SEM, Duron 950Mhz, 512MB - 64 for VGA, 10GB), I cannot get it to work with the mouse cable from the KVM. It will work when I connect only the KVM monitor cable and KVM keyboard cable (PS/2), but as soon as I connect the KVM mouse cable (PS/2), the PC will not start up - period. No fans spinning, no POST beeps, no nothing. Disconnect the KVM mouse cable and it works just fine. This PC also runs perfectly when connected directly to mouse/keyboard/monitor.

On my newer PC (specs in header), everything works just fine and dandy with KVM - no problems there.

I've swapped cables, I've tested with other PCs (which worked just fine) -- it just won't work with this older PC.

What could be the problem here? Any other ideas?

IMO If it's just this one old PC...why bother trying to force it to do something it won't do (in other words, you can't teach new tricks to an old dog) :-)

Well, it's not *that* old, I was just using the word "old" for point of reference.

Why shouldn't my "old" PC be able to work with a KVM?

Hi

check the back plate (& kvm )of the old pc isnt shorting the mouse usb port, for it not even to boot suggests somthing weird & wonderful.

Is the keyboard your using a multimedia type? if so try a bog standard keyb & mouse.
Tracker ball type mice can do this , dont know why.
is it a belkin omni kvm by any chance?

"old dog new tricks" rofl when my pc barks it gets a slap.

The mouse is PS/2, not USB. And I don't see how it can be doing that -- the PC runs just fine when connected directly to the monitor/keyboard/mouse and not through the KVM.

Certainly...

I've tried a different ("normal") keyboard and mouse already. It has no bearing on the problem.

Actually, even if I disconnect my keyboard and mouse from the KVM, the PC still won't run when the PS/2 mouse cable from the KVM is connected to the PC.

No, it's a brand new KVM from a company named "TrendNet"
