I don't think there is a best maker. I'd go with someone who offers a lifetime warranty or something. big brandnames are generally more reliable than no-namers. look for a name you recognize.
as for your size question. make sure your motherboard can handle the size you want, and go as big as you can afford. read your mb manual for any info about it.

Kingston is classified as one of the very best makes of RAM along with Crucial and a few others. More than 1gb isn't necessary unless your doing some serious video editing. And can you motherboard support PC3200 (400mhz) RAM. If it can't then it is kind of pointless buying it. It should say in your motherboard manual or on the box.
