I went to a party last weekend and the guy there had his laptop hooked up to some kind of box thing with all these controls on it. It was connected to his headphone jack by a rca jack that had about 4 plugs on one end. He then had 2 massive speakers hooked up to this box.

It was high quality booming sound
I want a setup like this to hear my games boom but dont want to spend $200 on 5.1 computer speakers
I want what he had becuase it's better and multipurpose

what was his box thing? an amp? how much would one cost? any recomendations on one
do they make these box things to work with spdif outs? because my abit nf7-s has an spdif out on it's onboard sound

seriously I dont know where to post this
thanks for your time everyone

Heh... I want to do the same thing.... But it is going to cost alot more than buying a good set of PC speakers. Its about $260 to $300(AU) for top of the line PC speakers. But it is about $450(AU) for a bottom of the line Amp (or AV reciver, Reciver, whatever you want to call it.) and then you have to get cords which will cost $8 for cheap crappy ones, then you have to set your self up with some speakers which can also cost you a bundle. But even with a bottom of the line Amp and average speakers I think you will still get superior sound to any PC speakers. Lucky I have been given a pair of reasonable speakers, a sub woofer and found the cables lying around the house which makes things cheaper. But for the moment my Logitech Soundman S-20 speakers are doing ok for my growing music collection..... What was the question again? LOL ; P Heh sorry for the mile long post, I just love my music.

Hi
sounds like the party dj is using a graphic equaliser, simple trick of getting better sound out of stereo input to amp'd speakers.
ask any 70 's metalhead how to do it.
and yes it blows most 5.1 away except for eax/ thx effects :D
i dont know where you can buy a modern day equivalent except from a car mod shop

I think ill just get a cheap amp at goodwill or a garage sale just to try it out

are amps and recievers the same thing? whats the difference?
will a sucky amp make my sound sound as crappy as the amp is?

amps are old.. recievers are new... but they do the same thing..mostly.. amps used to have just a few inputs and outputs and volume.. now recievers have multiple hookups and outputs for cd, dvd, tape, you name it there is a hookup for it ... but... you can still do it cheaply... probably for less than 200.00..

there are some cheap recievers that may have 2 or 3 inputs and 4 speaker outputs out there, u just have to find them.. good luck at goodwill I doubt you will find anything quality.. I have a friend that had a reciever he bought from radio shack for about 150.00 a few years back. brand was optimum.. something like that .. and it still works like a charm... if you have a store around you called rex audio go there.. they have good quality stuff and you can bicker the prices down with them..I got a jvc reciever there over 5 years ago and I still use it to this day.. paid about 170.00 for it and if you could find the same one it still would sell for about 150.00... they have great speakers there too.. also.. check out thoes rent to own places for stuff... they have massive speakers for pretty cheap....

good luck..

ok Ive been reading up and i have some questions

is there a real difference between a $5 amp at goodwill and a $160 reciever from circuit city?
i mean, could my ears tell the difference using just a few speakers that i have hooked up to my cd-changer right now

how long do these things last before they stop working?

how much is the cord that would go from my spdif out or my headphone jack to the input on the amp/reciever?

if the amp/reciever does 100watts but my speakers only do... "KLH acoustic suspension loudspeaker system model 300" that's all it says and that's my biggest pair of speakers, another pair (Yamaha) does min 10watts max 60watts, and the third pair is RCA POS rated at 1.5watts
they all say 8 ohms, what the heck does 8 ohms mean?

so would a 100watt amp blow all my speakers? should i just not use the 1.5watt pair? is there a device that prevents the amp from blowing my speakers?

finally, if i got a reciever supporting thx and stuff in order to hear those thx fancy stuff effects would i need some kind of special speakers?

could i attain a cheap 4 channel setup by getting 2 amps and using the 1st for front channels and the 2nd for rear channels?

thanks so much already everyone :D

The 60watt speakers would be good enough... the 1.5 watt speakers are pointless with an amp/reciver. I saw a 5.1 reciver for $450(AU) and a sterieo one was more expensive. A $5 amp from goodwill wont have a spdif jack. If you buy the cheapest new reciver you can find the chances are that it will have a spdif jack and it will have a radio tuner and heaps of inputs. I would definately go for the reciver because you will be able too use it for ever, they last for a long long long time unless you thrash it by having it up full ball every second of the day. A 100watt amp/reciver wont blow your speakers if you dont turn it up too far, even if you do it will just start to distort so you know when to turn it down. Hope this is helpfull.

yes definitly helpful, hmmm... this looks like a good one
Sony Surround Sound Receiver (STR-DE597)
SON STRDE597 • 6.1-channel surround sound
• 100 watts per channel
• Dolby® Digital EX • DTS®-ES
• Dolby® Pro Logic II
• Component inputs
$169.99

or
Sony Stereo Receiver (STR-DE197)
SON STRDE197 • 100 watts x 2
• Two audio inputs • 30 AM/FM presets
• A+B speaker switching
$127.49

"100 watts x 2" does that mean it only has 2 channels? meaning, i can only plug 2 speakers into it...
my main goal in this is to have as many speakers as i can hooked up at once

but that's $170, good thing christmas is coming

and the $170 reciever says, "Multiple video inputs: Connect all of your digital video sources with two component inputs."
why would you plug video into it? it's a reciever wtf?

Sorry for the late replys. The $127 reciver is sterieo meaning 2 speakers. The $170 is probbably what you want it is 6.1 channel. The reason it has video inputs and outputs is because if you have 3 vidio devices that you want connected to your TV but you only have one input jack on you TV, you plug your stuff up to the reciver and select which one you want to use.

I am using a cable that has standard headphone jack on one end, RCA on the other. It is going from my sound card (SBP 2) to a 120(?) amp input on a Sears 8-track player for an amp, works great, excelent sound.

yeah, i looked at goodwill and they had the stuff you are talking about neotms88

but, the mini headphone to rca cords were $2 and the only amp or reciever they had was serious old skool 70s style with am/fm dial tuner- no digital for $40

no way im paying $2 for a used old dirty cord and $40 for that reciever
