I would be willing to bet it's a setting in your sound mixer that's causing the problem. Make sure the volume is up on your mic channel. In Vista and Win 7 they have a level meter to show if your getting any signal on that channel, do you see the meter moving when you speak into the mic? You may also need to go into the control panel for your sound device and make sure it recognizes there is a microphone plugged in to the correct input. The mic should be plugged into the jack with the pink color ring around it.
