It depends.. if you have an AMD processor, or Intel processor.. if you have, lets say, an old duron, and you buy a new athlon, you may be able to use your old motherboard for the new processor, because i had a duron 800 mhz, and upgraded to 1.3 ghz, with the same motherboard. but, if you have an older celeron, you wont be able to plug in a newer celeron, because i think they changed the style of the chip.. but all in all, the only thing you will really need is a new motherboard.. but first try to plug in the new processor to the old motherboard, and see if it's the same.. if not, then just buy a new motherboard and you'll be set.

Have you checked to see if your motherboard will support the processor you bought. You will also need a better heatsink and fan for the processor. You may need to Flash the BIOS on the motherboard to enable it to recognize the faster processor. If your motherboard will run the new chip you may need to re-set some switches or jumpers on the motherboard. I would recommend that you download the manual for the motherboard if you don't have one. Check the version of your BIOS. You do that by watching the boot screens on startup. Check the MB maker's website for a later BIOS version if one is available. The main reason to flash the BIOS would be to allow you to run the processor you bought. If the MB will do that with the installed version of the BIOS then there is no reason to Flash it. If your machine doesn't display that info on startup, enter the BIOS on startup and change the setting to disable fast boot. As far as what else to buy to upgrade your computer, that depends on what you do with the computer. Why do you feel you need to change the processor?
