HI. Please help:
Have a 40 GB hard disk, NTFS Windows XP Pro sp1, and I want to make three partitions using PartitionMagic-8.0. I tried to do it 4 times about and after each reset the HD stay like C: only. Never take the PartitionMagic changes although at start system a blue screen notice that is making changes... When Windows wake-up the C: stay like the one with all 40 GB.
Before this I work many times with same software and can work fine in FAT32 file systems...
If somebody know why do not work in NTFS, or have trick to do, please tell me.Dolph

How exactly are you going through the partitioning processes?
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Have tried it of all the ways that I have believed suitable. First, with "Resize Partitions". That C: stay with 12 GB, at once distributing for half the area "unallocated" > Apply... The program seem do the work. Reset system and at start sreen-blue makingPartition Magic making tasks... Nothing. C: stay 40 GB.
Later try the "Create New Partition" step by step... Same appearance of good work. Same results...

How much data is there on the drive? If it's over (or close to) 12gb, PM will not be able to do it. PN can't split the data that is on the drive into separate partitions.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Partitiom Magic 8 has lots of bugs. Go to the Symantec web site and get the large patch file and install it.
You must have lots of free space on the hard drive before you start - I'm not sure what the minimum is. If the hard drive is quite full or data you can't do anything.
You haven't said whether you are using the floppy or Windows based version. If you used the floppy version it is recommended you use the Windows version for XP.
If you use the floppy version, you must make sure there is an minimum 8mb unpartitioned space at the end of the drive in order for it to be 100% XP compatible (that is what XP itself, and presumably the Windows version of PM, does). There is extensive help in Partition Magic itself, and more online at the Symantec site.
A few pointers:
1. Whether you use the floppy or Windows based version, Partition Magic uses at least one or a series of Dos batch files to make the actual changes. You set up PM to what you want to do, then when all is ready, the batch files are executed in order. If you do not let it run the batch files nothing will be changed.
2. You have to first Re-size the existing single partition so that it is smaller, so that new partitions can be created in the unpartitioned space that is then created - it can't be any smaller than the space the data takes up plus a minimum amount of free space required by PM and standard Windows rules. If you can't get it to shrink to the point where you have enough unpartitioned space to install the partition sizes you want, you have to remove some of the data.
3. Once you have the amount of unpartitioned free space available, you can Create the partitions - the standard thing is to make an Extended partition and then two Logical partitions within the Extended partition, or if you like you can make more Primary partitions (the one you shrunk is a Primary Partition) - XP can recognize multiple Primary partitions, but only one can be bootable (Active) at any one time .
If you are using the floppy version of PM, remember to leave 8mb or more of unparttioned space at the end of the drive, that is, e.g. if you install an extended partition, make it 8mb or more smaller than the maximum.Etc.

Dont know the answer to this question: what happens with PM if MBR virus protection is on in the BIOS ? will PM give an error code or just pretend it is working ? or will it resize the actural partition but not write the new size to the MBR

I suspect PM would detect it and display a message. It can't re-size partitions if the MBR can't be changed.
I never turn that setting on - it's very limited protection, and most anti-virus programs do that by default, and turn it off and on when needed.
In any case if that setting is turned on in the bios Setup, it should be turned off before running PM.
