Comment:

Running on an older pc but have had NO problems with it (other than small harddrive, but has been all I needed).
Tried to restart pc yesterday and now can't get it past DOS window that reads win.com missing.

It's win98se that I'm running, and came installed on pc so no disc.

I've managed to run scandisk and fixed errors from DOS.

now it just goes back to line that says:

c:\>

I tried "dir c:\windows\win.com"
and get "file not found"

Is there ANYTHING I can do from this c:\> line at this point???
:(

ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com

just gives me a further message:

saying 'invalid parameters'

Sorry ... EXACT wording says-

'required parameter missing'

and jumps to another c:\> prompt.

I found an old win98 floppy that someone had given me, but alas - of course NO floppy drive on my pc

:(

Four steps:

1. boot off a Win98 boot floppy & select "with CD-ROM support"

2. extract the file Win.cnf file from the windows CD & copy it to C:\windows

HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files

3. rename the Win.cnf file to Win.com

4. restart the computer
