P4P800-E,P43.0C SATA HD Slow Lately

Few months back, got the new mobo and CPU. Went through he** initially with very slow performance with the HD only to find out the Promise controller didn't play well with the Maxtor SATA HDs, and switched to the Intel ICH5 controller. 95MB/sec transfer then. Lately, the HD has been running at 40-45MB/sec (benched with Sandra), and not sure why. Have run Adaware and SpyBot SnD, cleaned the HD, defragged, checked for disk errors, and still slow. I also don't see anything new when checking boot etc with HijackThis. No changes to BIOS either.
