Hey everyone, sorry for posting another question : \ I am going to buy a new hard drive for my computer tomorrow because my current one has had a few troubles and I think it may die in a couple of months. But I dont want to throw it yet. I am going to put it in my P1 machine that I use for music and internet. I keep this machine in a cupboard that dosent really have any ventalation at all which I thaught was fine because it dosent make much heat anyways. But today I replaced the power supply with a quieter one just after it had been on playing music for a couple of hours and the heat was incredible! I am worried that if I put my 80Gb HDD in it it will die very quickly because of the heat. The hard drive enclosure is a bad design for heat with basically no airflow.
I have tidyed the cables now and I will try find somewhere else to mount it like in a 5.25 bay. So if I put this HDD in this old system will it kill it? Or will the hard drive die of its current illness first?Mattwizz3 : )
Sempron 2600+ OC 2.2GHz
1Gb DDR400 Dual Channel
2X 80Gb 7200Rpm
nVIDIA FX5500 128Mb The Devil '64bit'
Damn Microsoft...
DIE STEAM DIE!

P1 will not recognize 80GB HDD without Overlay Software.
As it is in a cupboard leave the case off....

Cool, I did update its bios to the latest available version from May 1998 so it accepts drives up to 32Gb. If i cant get the overlay going I will be happy with 30Gb anyways, If it can hold Windows 100Mb of apps and my 12Gb of music I will be happy, its better than its current 3.25Gb anyways : P
Thanks for the fast response.Mattwizz3 : )

I suggest that you iinstall a fan to ventilate that closet. Electronics do not do well in high heat.

Here is a site with BIOS patched for up to 128 gigabyte hard drives for many older motherboards, including many Pentium MMX era Socket Seven motherboards. And the best part is, they are free!

Thanks repo man, I have a GA-586AT motherboard and there is only bioses for GA-586ATX and ATE motherboards dang.
I baught a 200GB SATA hard drive with NCQ and used MAX Blast 4 to copy windows XP over to it and make it bootable and it worked fine and all my programs were working (Except Firefox) I re booted and "Click Whirr" and it turns out that my other drive was failing! Its funny because I use that drive to back up on : P I'm gonna copy all my data from it to my Old C:\ drive.Oh and by the way, MAX Blast 4 formatted my new drive as a FAT32 Drive, how do i get it to NTFS so I can have Files larger than 4Gb.
Thanks guys

Its a little late.... but for people who stumble over this.. The hard drive had to be capped at 32Gb and now the old beast is up and running. There is quite a speed difference going from an old drive to a new one even if it is still running at ATA33 speed. It isnt in the cupboard anymore but nex to it and the hdd is in an open 5.25" bay so it gets a nice draft from the PSU..
Ill give you the monsters Specs for fun:
P1 150Mhz
64Mb Ram
16X CD-ROM
32Gb 7200/2m HDD
2Mb S3 Trio 64V+
The system is nice and quiet too.Mattwizz3 : )
