I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop which keeps shutting down every so often. It just turns off. We've noticed that it has been getting very warm.

Around the time that this problem started occuring, Dell's fix for Service Pack 2 for the Inspiron 1150 was installed on it. The install claimed to increase the processor speed to help overcome slowdown issues with SP2.

Could this be causing the laptop to overheat? If so, is there a way to lower that speed back down?

Yeah, thats probably it...
I have limited knowledge about laptops, but that is a problem that can occur on a desktop too. If you were using a desktop, I would say take it apart and put a ton of fans around the processor and hope for the best.
I have never used the that laptop before, but since it is a dell i assume that Windows is a slightly different version than you would see on a desktop. You might want to try going to the "Dell Soulution Ceneter" which is located on the lower left of the start menu. There might be some options in the Control panel about the dell software fixes, you might check there and it should give you an option to change your overclocking(overclocking is a term that means make your prosessor go faster than its supposed to)

Im sorry, but that is all i can tell you since i know little of this subject
