Overheating AMD Athlon XP-M laptop

February 23, 2010 at 07:21:26
Specs: Windows XP
eMachines laptop with AMD Athlon XP-M/1800
overheats and crashes. How can I underclock the
CPU to keep it running. I reflashed the Phoenix
BIOS but how do I access the settings, and what
settings do I change to do the underclocking?
Laptop cooler doesn't do a thing.

U didn't post anything that indicates the laptop is overheating. Better check temp in bios. Underclock cpu? Mh! U can't underclock or overclock, remember it's oem.

I guess I am assuming that it overheats. It does crash and turn
off, but just before it crashes, I hear the fan speed up to max
cooling. I have cleaned the fax/heat sink, but that has not
helped. I can use the system all day as a remote access
terminal for my office computer, but if I try almost anything on
the local computer, it will crash.
Does your reply indicate that I can't underclock this CPU?

Oem system's won't let u overclock or underclock. Did u check the cpu temp in bios? If cpu overheats the system restart. U mention cleaning cpu heatsink, did u apply new thermal paste?
