Original RAM won't work anymore?

Dell Dimension 4600 desktop

Specs: Windows Vista, Dell Dimension 4600/512 ram
So my old Dell Dimension 4600's hard drive died and I replaced it with one from another old comp- fixed my issue, but then I decided to see what else I could replace- found two 256mb sticks of RAM in the other one and tried to add it to my Dell, but it didn't take- every time I booted it (attempting different configurations of the sticks) it only showed 256 in the system menu(instead of the 512 it actually had). So then I decided to just try and replace the old RAM with the slightly newer one- but didn't work, got three beeps and no post. So I cut my losses and put the old two sticks back- three beeps, no post. Tried switching them and every different combination of the four ports, no go. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you even know if the RAM you added is compatible with your MB and CPU?
