Comment:

i really need help. I was using a rather old version notebook(IBM thinkpad), when suddenly the screen said sth like `physical memory in short', then the computer shut down itself.

i restarted it, and it said Operating System not found. What should i do?

If i want to re-install OS, how should i do that?

you may have a harddrive failure. check that before thinking about reinstalling. Diagnose and fix the right problem.

Go into your BIOS and make sure the drive is listed in there. If it is save and exit. Then try rebooting again. If you still get the message about the operating system not found, Try booting into Dos Mode and running scandisk on your drive. Note any problems it might find, if none, try to reboot again. If you still have the problem post back.

You can't do that. Thinkpad BIOS is a real simple affair, with auto detect for the hard drive.

TELL US WHAT MODEL THIS THING IS!!!!!!!!!!!

What can you boot from? Does it have a floppy? a CDROM? What I'd do is REMOVE the hd, and try booting from your system CD, if it has one, or a bootable floppy. Most thinkpads will boot from a floppy with no hd installed. This will prove that the machine can boot.

Then, troubleshoot your hd (if that's the problem) after you determine the machine boots ok. Probably the first thing to do is boot to a floppy and see if you can read the hd.

thanks for helping.

It's a thinkpad 390i (2626). I got into the Bios utility setup and there is sth saying the master drive is disabled. I think there is a problem on the hard disk.

I tried using a bootable floppy without the hd, and it didt help.

I think i will go to some stores to check my computer and fix the hard disk (if it's the problem.

Thank you everyone.

I don't understand what "sth" means. Do you mean the hdd IS disabled, or is NOT disabled?

Sounds to me like you indeed have hdd problems. I've seen many on ebay, you should be able to find a 20-40 gb drive for less than 100.00 US.

IF and I say IF you can find it IBM drive utility, you could check the drive with that. If you're interested, and post back, I'll do some digging.

I'd say your hdd is failed. I don't know where you are, in the U.S. you can buy an adaptor inexpensively that will allow you to hood your laptop hdd (just the hdd by itself) to one of your desktop IDE cables.

These are VERY handy for testing and copying files.

Here's an ebay sale JUST FOR INFORMATION. I don't know this seller or his reputation.

Hopefully as you can see in the picture, the big end ofn the connector goes to your desktop IDE cable, and a spare power connector. The small end hooks to your laptop hdd.

If you have any computer hardware stores where you are, you should be able to find one.
