Comment: I keep reading how you are supposed to keep your PC case sealed because of the high frequencies inside. My new CUSL2-C motherboard has the COM2 port missing so there is an empty whole there. It was supposed to come with a metallic sticker to cover it but the seller lost it. Anyway, is it unhealthy to have an opening in the case? Thanks

Reply: (edit)Well a bug might crawl in but besides that I would not worry. Hell, the side of my case is of right now, has been off for a couple of months, to lazy to place it back on :) A sealed case is idea, yes. It helps with proper cooling and it does keep in RF but you are talking about a tiny little RS232 port here. If it bothers you that much, get some duct tape and patch it. Reply: (edit)You have to have holes in your case to allow hot air flow out of the case and cold air flow in. If you seal you computer, the temperature will rise and rise until you have a nice electric stove.

Reply: (edit)Ditto . . . That silly little hole is no "worse" than the holes in vented side covers which are available on many cases. The serial port hole is nothing at all to be concerned about. Heck, even a PRINTER port hole or any other port hole is nothing to be concerned about. But THE BUGS . . . Oh my Gosh, the BUGS . . . You have to STOP THEM - stop them at ALL COSTS - squish them, spray them, squash them, shoo them, burn them, move the computer to a safer location, and . . . Umh, ooops, sorry 'bout that. Lost my mind there for a moment. ;D Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Reply: (edit)When I say sealed I mean having the cover or all the sides on the computer. Yes, they all need proper airflow and I've never seen a case that that didn't provide some type. I used to build Tempest systems for the DEA and even those had holes for airflow and they didn't want a damn think leaking out of those systems. KTTD Computing.Net Off Topic Forum

Reply: (edit)Bugs, Man I could tell you all about them. I lived in a jungle hell (well, semi- tropical) for many years. Roaches and ants, they really were a fright. The only good ants were the marching army variety...those roaches ran like the dickens, but so did you! I guarantee they would find a home in your computer. The RF through such a small opening isn't much to worry about. Your cell phone emitting into your cranium would doubless be worse. I like the duct tape cure. "thousand mile an hour tape" we use to call it. Who's got bugs crawling in and out their ears -nobody

Reply: (edit)If you leave your slot covers off and you system on the floor you may get mice. Some of them like to chew wires.

Reply: (edit)I lost my main machine 4 weeks ago to a storm here in Fla, and the temp machine I put together has no side panels and I've got the hard drive sitting on a book on top of the case. Granted this is not good, but it is only temp. But so far my CPU temp is cooler than when I've got the side panels on.

Reply: (edit)No, I wasn't fortunate enough to have a computer back then. I did have a polaroid spectra camera that I was very proud of. One day I noticed some tiny tiny ants crawling around on the INSIDE of the lens. I was fumed. Too many more stories like that could I tell (I've got LOTS of experience with fer-de-lance snakes too). It seems strange to you only because of your environment...consider yourself lucky. When you've been snake-bit and the local witch-doctor can't be found in the village, who can save you now -nobody

Reply: (edit)Don't know where you people live but... i had never bugs, mice, rats or roaches in my room... And I'm not that rich... For AMD based systems (especially XP series) you better leave the cover on. Smal holes aren't important Greetzz
