Hey all it's me again - I've been doing a lot of testing on stuff since the last post and now, I can't even find it on the page there are so many others.

I found the link to it in MyComputing.net though, so go here to see what's up:

http://computing.net/hardware/wwwboard/forum/27209.html

I have run prime95 and memtest - No errors - I even let memtest run for 2 hours - 26 passes - no errors.

A friend said it might be sound related because my Realtek AC'97 sound card isn't that good - So I went into the BIOS and disabled it on bootup - Restarted, got back into Windows, then plugged in my Sound Blaster MP3+(USB) card. USB Audio Hardware was installed, but I can't install any Sound Blaster software.

I bought this thing last summer and now I don't know where the software is - In order to install drivers, I need SB hardware/software it says. It tells me I can't install because there were no previous SB WDM files.

Then when I try to install some software, it says it can't find my hardware - ha ha.

I'm getting really frusterated - I think I've isolated the problem, but I can't fix it!!!

Please help - Thanks in advance.!

Hi

If you are trying to track down why a problem is occurring, it is best not to change too much hardware, as it moves the focus of why you have a problem too far from the starting point.

What I mean is - if the problem occurred for another reason other than what you would expect, if you get the system to run better, then you still have the original problem lurking in the background. (Hope that was a bit clearer)

Anyhow, enable realtec again.

Reinstall dx 9.0b.

OK that done - run directx diagnostics.

Test sound and video.

Record error mesages

** Note You can't run the GF2 (jam stated in last note - GF2 is not supported by dx9.x)

See how that works for you.

I already ran DXDiag. No errors were reported with the GF2 or the ATI9600.

However, I did notice the same problem during DirectDraw and Direct3D tests on both cards - Which leads me to believe that both of them can't be bad.

During the tests, the bouncing white box and what not would go for about 2 to 3 seconds, then like pause, then continue, and it kept doing this all the way around the box.

It doesn't matter whether the AC'97 is disabled or enabled because I have the same problem both ways.

Now what?!?!

I didn't say he couldn't run the GF2, I said that it doesn't support DX9. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the GF2 is a DX7 card...it obviously doesn't support DX9 because it came out years before DX9 became available. The original version(s) of DX9 were very buggy & wreaked havoc on a lot of systems...which was why there was DX9a. But that one was so bad it was quickly yanked by Microsoft & DX9b was released.

Don't refer to your video card as a 9600 if it's a 9600SE. The 9600SE officially supports DX9, but's a piece of $hit with a 64-bit buswidth. At least the GF2 is a 128-bit card.

I doubt the onboard audio is causing your problem, but if you wanna test your theory, just disable it. If you feel that's the answer, get a PCI card. You can get a decent one for under $20...you don't have to go for a $100 Soundblaster

Thanks Jam.

I tried disabling it and re-enabling it, but nothing happened. I reinstalled the USB Sound Blaster and it works for music and stuff.

I still have that lag in games though and honestly have no other ideas - My GF2 worked well with DX8, but I can't go back unless I do a clean install...

I guess I'll just have to live with it...

jam and 05,

I don't think his problem is either video card. It doesn't take much processing or video card power to run dxdiag direct draw and I've never seen much speed difference in any combination of processor, memory and video card.

Now, I've never seen direct draw tests pause either.

That said, I'm still thinkin' there's either an OS, driver or direct x problem here. I'm leanin' toward drivers.

Think I'd run a utility to scrub all the drivers and pick one of the cards to start all over with; probably the 9600se and use the drivers off the original install disk.

Looks like we're fine with overheating or memory problems too.

"However, I did notice the same problem during DirectDraw and Direct3D tests on both cards - Which leads me to believe that both of them can't be bad."

I agree.

Hi Skip,

Very true, so it does indicate that there's some sort of problem...but what?

There have been several posts about performance issues with the 9600SE 64-bit card...I guess I've made it my own personal crusade...lol

SteadyLoungin05,

I'm not sure if this has been suggested (probably though)...but have you done a thorough house cleaning? Virus scan, spyware scan, defrag, run MSCONFIG to check what's loading at startup?

You could try hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager...click on the Processes tab...then click on the column heading "User Name" to bring all programs associated with your user name to the top of the list. Then one at a time, highlite all entries associated with your user name & click "End Process" except EXPLOER.exe & taskmgr.exe. Don't touch anything associated with SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICES, etc

Then try running dxdiag & see if it makes a difference...

I know how you feel about se cards. I have no trouble with mine regardless of which drivers, stock clock, overclock or anything else.

Still the old 233/3dfx3000, Duron1300/ATI7200 and my current rig do the same job of running direct draw tests...I can't tell 'em apart by watching.

This is a rig I'd like to spend some time with to pin down the problem here. Odd stuff ain't it.

Hey Skip,

I have a 233MMX w/VooDoo3 2000, a Duron 1200 w/GF2 MX, Athlon 1.33 Tbird w/GF4 MX440, & my main machine...1800+ w/Ti4200.

I'm gonna go a little off topic here, but something that perplexes me (& I was gonna post this) is a sound lag issue with Spider Solitaire...when the cards are dealt, the sound lags behind. I've seen this on several machines...some slow machines work just fine, some fast machines have the lag. It's something I check on almost every machine I work on, & I've found no "rhyme or reason" for the lag. Have you run across this?

Hi

So you reinstalled drivers and then Directx 9.0b and ran the test?

Jam - ok sorry not to be clearer - poor choice of words "can't run". But I though I got the context right.

Look if a video card isn't supported then its not. When directx doesn't work properly its not uncommon to have "problems"

So what I was saying it was pointless at this moment to have the GF2 card in. I could have asked SteadyLoungin05 uninstall DirectX and put back and earlier version of DX (but that procedure can have problems too!)

Strange though if the card isn't supported that DX diag has the same problems with both video cards.

Make sure the graphics driver is installed and then last thing install directx.

Still no better you may have to update the chipset driver then video, sound then install DirectX

jam,

No, and just played a quick game on the 2400+ with the sound seeming perfect. I'll keep my eyes (ears) open.

Back to work; all the cards I've worked with since dx9.0b came out work just fine with it. I do recall one problem with the 8Mb rage pro in my Inspiron 7000 and dx8 and no other problems at all except for the first dx9.0 and 9.0a drivers on just about everything.

My ATI7200 one pipe card ran it's best on the most recent catalyst drivers and dx9.0b and it's not a dx9 compatible card.

I think I'd just pick one of the cards and do a careful driver install, make sure 9.0b is up to snuff, and do all the scandisk, defrag, malware, and registry clean things I could do. The answer is there somewhere.

I did get dxdiag to hiccup in the bouncing box test by removing a file and the quick pause you described occured when dxdiag gave me an error message box. May not be the problem but perhaps it's just something happening in the background.

Jam and Skip,

Thanks for your help.

Jam,

Yeah I have already done all of that stuff - I ran MSCONFIG and cleaned up a lot of stuff - barely anything starts on bootup now and there are only two or three user services running when I am playing these games.

Everything from the 9600SE is off my computer - I am running the GeForce2 right now....

I should go ahead and try then 9600SE again with the install cd??

I'm willing to give anything a shot....

I did come across something interesting though - In the music tab of dxdiag, where you can test the music - THe music was not choppy on the Microsoft Synthesizer, but it was on everything else.

I tried finding drivers, but had no luck.

ANy thoughts?

Hi

Which drivers?

Sometimes the order in which you install drivers makes a difference to a sucsessful install of directx. Sometimes you can't just update a driver, and you need to remove it first.

You should google and see what role directx plays in a windows system - etc. Honestly, I don't know what the makers of directx mean when they say a card isn't supported and yet it still runs ok. (or run the card as well as the older version)
