Hey, I have recently come into possesion of a Compaq Presario 5000. It has onboard sound which Windows 98SE doesn't seem to have the driver for. On further research none of the drivers on Compaq's site work and I don't have any restore CDs. The sound worked prior to me wiping the drive and installing from a Windows98SE CD. Its an Intel 810 chipset, or to be more specific "FW82810E". I checked Intel's site and it says that it uses AC '97 and that they dont supply drivers for it because there are too many versions. I'm really ticked with the lack of support from Compaq and Intel and surprised that the hardware is so proprietary. Can anyone help me?

Have you enabled sound in BIOS????
Have you ascertained the make of the Sound Chip??
Have you tried the Sound Chip manufacturers website for a driver??
Intel810e is the motherboard chipset not the AC9x sound codec!
Last but not least have you updated the BIOS available from www.hp.com and the mobo chipset drivers available from http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=18&strTypes=DRV%2CARC&ProductID=816&OSFullName=Windows*+98+SE&submit=Go%21

Hi
Curious - why have you arrived that none of the drivers suit your machine?
The codec [AC 97 stuff etc] is not required to make sound.
Some ideas at the URL below

I'm not sure but the last response - link covers ESS Allegro WDM audio drivers.

x86 brings up some good points. Make sure you have installed the drivers for your 810. Chipset driver [inf one] needs to be first I think?

The Intel Chipset drivers is a self installing package after being unzipped, it will only install the appropiate drivers, I use the older version 3.20.1008 on PII's LX/BX/ZX and late Pentium I MMX MoBo's which have USB capibility, as it supports W95B/C, which version 5 does not.
I think most manufacturers do a fair job of support, it is knowing where to look which can be diificult!!!!!!!!!!1

Sent u the correct drivers in an email, enjoy!! I have the 5008 series, need anything else holler!!!!!!!!!

My PC came with integrated AC 97 sound and from day one I had sound problems ,sometimes sound ,most of the time no sound ? I spent hours on the phone with support, trouble shooting the sound to no avail ! It came down to boxing up the system and sending it back ,for them to fix ,or buying a PCI sound card and installing it .I went for the later and installed a Diamond S90 PCI sound card. Now not only do I have sound all the time ,its better sound ! I've read many post from other with AC 97 sound problems !
Good Luck Nick

Hi again
Nick a very valid point on installing a sound card. However with some systems is not always posibile as not many pci slots are available. Sometimes the slots are not available simply for the physical size of the boards and/or motherboard form factor.
A good point to consider when having trouble is :: How many other people have a similar system and are they having problems? If they have identical systems like a integrated board/package then you have to consider either things are not being installed well/right order or the problem is with a out of spec component AND /OR you're just part of the first few having this problem.
As far as I can tell there is a bit of dificulty in determining which driver to install, then what vintage driver to use.
Some of the driver installs now rely on MS service pack 1.
As x86 mentions - the chip set drivers are important!!
