The first thing that comes to mind- however trivial, are they powered speakers? Underpowered speakers never work that well... There is also an equalizer within XP- make sure that is up.

Are you sure you have the latest drivers? Did you plug the speakers into the back of the mobo or a front audio jack? Do you have any other sound card installed at this point in time?

try it with some headphones plugged into the pc instaed of the speakers. The output from the pc is not usually powerful enough to get sound from speakers and PC speakers therefore normally have an amplifier built into them. it is possible that the amplifier in the speakers has failed. I assume you do have power connected to the speakers

If none of the above seem to work.
Try typing alsndmgr.cpl into a run dialogue box and have a look in there. Worth a look anyway.

yes i have try connecting headphone instead of speaker but there was not sound there.
i have read in wikipedia about ac97 and window xp, which says
"Microsoft has acknowledged that in one of their automatic updates they have caused the AC97 to stop working....."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC97

Then i decided to upgrade from sp2 to sp3 but still there is no sound.
