Comment:

I have an older Gateway monitor hooked to an HP computer. Just recently the monitor started to emit a high pitched buzzing sound. The sound is worse the more black is displayed (i.e. white screen barely emits a buzz). I have adjusted the refresh rate from 60 up to 85 and still am getting the buzzing on black. Any ideas what might be causing the buzz. Is my monitor about to die?
Thanks,
Jeff

Excellent excuse to switch to an LCD monitor. :-)

Better display
Saves on electricity (greener)

An LCD would be nice but I have to justify that the old one is dying to get the boss to buy a new one. Any ideas on what is causing the buzzing?

The most common cause of a noise like that is the flyback transformer that supplies high voltage to the tube (the conductive coating on outside/inside surface of sides of the tube is essentially a giant capacitor that stores a charge) is arcing (shorting but not directly touching) to something inside the case - not a good thing at all - in fact it's possible that could CAUSE A FIRE inside the monitor case. In any case, it's not worth fixing.

On old tv's this was often a problem with a part called a flyback, deflection yoke, or transformer.

Sure isn't worth getting inside a $10 monitor to try and find the problem. Even if it was, you'd be hard pressed to find a replacement part or a tech trained to fix it.

I recommend your boss replace the thing if your sanity is worth anything to him.
