ive had a look on the market and all the new sound cards appear to be only in 7.1 with my new system that i have ordered the parts for will my pci 128 run on the newer boards cus i don have 7.1 Speakers just 2.1 i feel its like a waste of cash getting a new card as i will only be able to hear just 2.1 The simplest solutions are the best and they are often save you money

I connected my sound card to my home stereo system, with a ten dollar cable, after being disappointed with PC speakers. You might want to consider buying the card and doing the same. It rocks.

most new mobos come with sound on-board, does your new one not have that? do you actually need to instal a sound card?

Are you getting a brand new board? The onboard sound on new boards is generally pretty good...most boards offer 6 channel or 8 channel sound. A PCI card usually isn't necessary unless you have a specific sound need that's not available from the onboard. You don't have to use 7.1 speakers with 8 channel audio...you can use 2.0, 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, etc. All you need to do is configure the audio settings for the type of speakers you have.
