I have a bit of a delima. I have a freind that needs me to fix their computer. It seems the driver for the modem is not installed. They have no paper work for the PC, do not know how to look inside to see what modem is actually in the case and they live three hours away.
I have looked all over the internet to find out what kind of modem came in the computer, but have had no luck since it is an older unit. I am hoping that perhaps someone might know were I can find this information.
The PC is a Dell Deminsion XPS D333.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tell him to check the back of the computer for a sticker that says Service Tag number. With that number, you may be able to find the information you need on Dell's web site under support, or you can call Dell with the Service Tag number and ask their Tech Support rep.

If they have the disks that came with the PC, the modem driver should be on one of them. There's always the possibility that Windows generic drivers would work, if you know how to load them. Otherwise, short of opening the case & looking for a model number, you could try downloading & installing Everest home edition to help identify the hardware.

G'day,
Can you they communicate with the modem? Try to get them to run something like hyperterminal and use the Hayes ATI commands to get the modem information. I think sending ATI1 to ATI12 will extract various bits of info from the modem bios chip. Windows control panel/modems/diagnostics/more information will do this too.
Good luck,
Elric

How will they get a modem driver if they know which modem they have? Do they have access to anther computer to do the download and transfer or will this be done by mail? I ask because there are various utilities that may identify the modem, if you can install the utility on the computer. Everest may be useful, there are others too. As was mentioned the computer itself may yield the necessary info. If this modem was running previously under this same installation of windows then by using the hardware wizard and instructing to search for a suitable driver in windows it may find the old driver and use it.
