I need data off an old Toshiba laptop HDD. The drive was the C: drive on a Dell laptop system running W2K. I tried placing the HDD in a USB enclosure but neither the controller and drive are visible. Rebooting the machine that they are linked too doesn't work either. Same message about a USB device not being valid or recognized. Any ideas to get the old drive working?

Check your BIOS to make sure the USB is enabled.

You can get a cable adapter to convert from 2.5" to 3.5" and plug the drive into a desktop. You can find one at StarTech.com and the model number is IDE4044.

You may also need a driver for your USB adapter to recognize your hard drive. That is probably the cause of the message. Did you USB adapter come with any software?
